Official Passport Photo Guidelines
To ensure your application is not delayed or rejected, you must follow strict guidelines set by government agencies. Here are the universal rules for almost all passports and visas:
- Lighting: Face a window for natural, even lighting. Avoid harsh shadows on your face or on the background behind you. The photo must be clear and in color.
- Background: Stand about 1.5 feet away from a plain white or off-white wall. This distance helps eliminate shadows cast on the wall.
- Expression: Maintain a neutral facial expression with both eyes open and mouth closed. Do not smile broadly.
- Glasses & Headwear: Most countries (including the US and UK) no longer allow glasses of any kind in passport photos. Take them off to avoid rejection. Hats and head coverings are only allowed for religious or medical purposes, and must not cast shadows on the face.
- Attire: Wear normal everyday clothing. Uniforms are generally not permitted.
Specific Country Requirements
United States Passport (2 x 2 inches)
The image size must be exactly 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). The head must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (25 - 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
UK, EU, and Schengen Visa (35 x 45 mm)
The image must be 35mm wide by 45mm high. The head should take up between 29mm and 34mm of the height.
How to Print Your Photos
