How the PhotoSplit Scanner Works
PhotoSplit Studio utilizes advanced computer vision via OpenCV.js to automatically detect the edges of your physical photographs against the background of your scanner bed. Unlike traditional desktop software that requires tedious manual drawing of bounding boxes, our browser-based app instantly analyzes the contrast differentials to isolate each print.
Step-by-Step Guide to Digitizing Your Archives
- Prepare Your Scanner: Wipe the scanner glass with a microfiber cloth. Dust and smudges can trick the edge detection algorithm.
- Arrange the Photos: Place 3-4 photos on the scanner bed. Ensure there is at least a quarter-inch (5mm) gap between each photo, and keep them away from the extreme edges of the glass.
- Scan at High Resolution: We recommend 300 DPI for standard 4x6 prints, or 600 DPI if you plan to enlarge or reprint the photos later. Save the file as a high-quality JPEG or lossless TIFF.
- Upload and Split: Drag the scanned image into PhotoSplit Studio. The app will immediately draw blue bounding boxes around the detected photos.
- Review and Save: If a photo was scanned slightly skewed, check the "Auto-straighten" box. Click "Save All" to instantly download your separated photos in a ZIP archive.
Troubleshooting Detection Issues
If the app is failing to detect your photos accurately, try the following adjustments:
- Adjust the Background Threshold: If your scanner lid is dark, you may need to lower the threshold slider. If the lid is white, a higher threshold (around 240) usually works best.
- Change the Minimum Area: If the tool is picking up dust specks as photos, increase the "Min photo area" slider to ignore small artifacts.
- Dark Photos on a Dark Background: If your photo has very dark edges (like night shots) and your scanner lid is also dark, the algorithm won't find the edge. In this case, simply use the "Add Crop" button to manually draw the box.
Privacy First: No Server Uploads
Most online photo tools process your images on their servers. This means your private family memories are uploaded, processed remotely, and temporarily stored in the cloud. PhotoSplit Studio is entirely different.
Thanks to modern WebAssembly (WASM) technology, the entire image processing engine runs locally inside your web browser. When you drop a file into the app, it is loaded directly into your device's RAM. It never crosses the internet, ensuring 100% privacy and security for your family archives.
Frequently Asked Questions
What file formats are supported?
You can upload JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, WebP, GIF, and even PDF files containing scanned images. You can export the split photos as high-quality JPEGs, lossless PNGs, or combine them back into a multi-page PDF.
Is this tool really free?
Yes! PhotoSplit Studio is completely free to use. There are no subscriptions, no watermarks, and no arbitrary limits on how many photos you can process.
How does the auto-color enhancement work?
Vintage photographs often suffer from color fading and a yellow/red color cast over time. Our auto-enhance feature applies a Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) algorithm to automatically balance the white point and restore contrast.
